CCTV News pointed out that China has built the world's largest new energy equipment blockchain platform, with over 8 million new energy equipment on the chain. With the introduction of recycling in usage scenarios such as streetlights and toys that require lower battery capacity, it is possible to make more use of new energy batteries. It is understood that the new energy equipment blockchain platform is a product under Ant Chain.

Chen Zhong, Director of the Blockchain Research Center at Peking University, stated that; Blockchain can accurately record the lifecycle of batteries, starting from when they were produced, and what kind of utilization they have undergone. This immutable history has a positive impact on the circulation, utilization, and recycling of batteries.

According to statistics, China has entered a large-scale retirement period for power batteries. In 2023, the retired power batteries in China will reach 590000 tons. Starting from 2028, the retired power batteries in China will exceed 2.6 million tons per year. What about the surge in retired batteries?

According to the national standards for new energy vehicles, the remaining 80% of the power battery capacity can be "retired". The reduced battery capacity will reduce the range and affect the user experience. However, retired batteries can still be used in scenarios with low performance requirements for batteries such as energy storage and electric bicycles, achieving "cascade utilization".
Although cascade utilization can extend the service life of power batteries, it is not easy for recycling enterprises to practice, mainly because the cost of understanding the degree of loss of retired batteries is high. And blockchain technology is changing this situation.

By installing blockchain modules on batteries, real-time uploading of battery operation data can be achieved, and data sources such as charging and discharging times and battery health can be trusted and tamper proof. In this way, the recycling party does not need to disassemble each item and can understand all the health data of the battery. The head of the battery operation company stated that they can sell some batteries at an additional price of three times when recycling.
